Importance of clinical pathology: Laboratory test can reveal

• Overall state of the patient
• Specific disease
• The status of the disease

and it is one of the most important parts in clinical practice.

Anatomic Pathology: We provide general pathological examination including

• Histopathology: Biopsy (small sample taken from the patient during the exam) or resection specimen (large specimen usually taken by surgery) should be processed into the slide glass and reviewed with a microscope. Immunohistochemistry may be utilized to further investigate the lesion
• Cytopathology: Smear, touch or liquid specimen (liquid based cytology) will be stained and reviewed with microscope
• Autopsy which is not currently provided

The pathologists in GOAL are professionally trained in Cambodia and supervised under a board certified pathologist/cytopathologist/molecular pathologist in Japan. Most of the cases are diagnosed in Phnom Penh. Rare and challenging cases are consulted in Japan and for the most challenging cases, additional consultation to the specialist in the field will be made to ensure the reliable diagnosis.

Importance of anatomic pathology: Anatomic pathology can

• diagnose cancer, or rule out malignancy
• evaluate the progression of the cancer or benign lesion

and the accurate and reliable pathological result is definitely necessary in clinical practice.
